A multi-talented artist and musician, Scott Lamlein’s many roles include church musician, composer, concert organist, recording artist, choral conductor, and teacher.
Cited by The American Organist magazine as infusing his music with “virtuosic flair and fire,” Scott’s organ performances bring a unique emotional and spiritual inspiration to his audiences. Listeners find a place of solace, a time of wonder and awe. His playing has been described as inspiring, uplifting, powerful and flawless.
In demand as a concert artist, Scott has performed in the United States, Canada, and Europe, with appearances at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in South Carolina, Methuen Memorial Music Hall, the Überlinger Münster in Germany, and St. Thomas Church, New York. Recent recitals have included St-Sulpice, Paris. Scott’s concerts have been broadcast in South Carolina, Boston and Worcester, and on the nationally-syndicated radio show, Pipedreams.
Previously, he served as Artistic Director of the Music Alive! Concert Series, the a cappella chorus, Sacred Voices, and the South Hadley Chorale. As Director of Music and Organist at St. John’s Episcopal Church, in West Hartford, CT, Scott directs a Royal School of Church Music affiliated Youth Choir and semi-professional Adult Choir, as well as presenting organ masterworks in regular Sunday services. He also serves as artistic director of the church’s Music at the Red Door concert series, which annually presents a music exploration camp for underserved children in neighboring Hartford.
Scott has three CDs in current release—The Organ at Worship, and In Quiet Joy: Music of Advent and Christmas, and a CD of his piano compositions, entitled Peace. He also is featured on the CD, Great Organs of Worcester. His compositions are often featured as part of the online Jesuit daily podcast, Pray as You Go, and his organ compositions have been published by Lorenz.
Scott is a 1994 graduate of the Hartt School, University of Hartford, where he studied organ with John Holtz and Larry Allen. He has also coached with James David Christie and Thomas Murray. Active as an organ instructor for over 25 years, he serves on the faculty of the Hartt Community Division, where he specializes in organ education for pianists.
The organ is the most complex instrument that exists, and my goal is to make it accessible, enjoyable, and exciting - especially to students who have a strong keyboard background. My class is a non-competitive, supportive environment, where students learn as much from each other as they do from me and the materials provided. There are many opportunities to play the organ professionally, even at an intermediate level of ability; it is my goal to prepare students for that, and to approach both the process and the goal with joy.
